The Map Is Not The Terrain (40k Manifesto)

The map is not the territory.

Today we’re going to take a brief but wordy tour around what has changed since the dawning of 11th Edition Warhammer 40,000 in June of 2026. If you were around for the All Terrain Must Be Exactly As Unhinged As WTC and No I Will Not Paint My Models I Bought To Paint And I Am Mad About It battles discussions of 2025, then you’ll probably be familiar with some moderately-hinged ranting from this very blog. In Ying and Yang I, we touched on things like terrain and modeling standards. In the Ying and Yang II installment, we reviewed our stances on clocks and scoring.

Since last year we have improved our processes (see The Gray Card), clarified our standards (the all-seeing BOLTERCON 2026 Player Packet), and continuously updated the community on where we are going (so much fun in our Discord). And now, with just two Ptuesdays left until BOLTERCON 2026, let’s flesh out terrain yet again. Because it’s everywhere, all the time, and all at once (per edition).

You have your BOLTERCON 2026 registration right? You’re getting the emails with all those helpful reminders? Time to check!

Terrain – It’s Always Terrain

During our incredibly HYPE launch party for 11th Edition (best currently supported edition of Warhammer 40,000 honestly) we were happy to uncover a hard truth from that first deployment at 12:01a – terrain was now very much standardized in a way that immediately invalidated all of our current 40k terrain! Craters and ponds? Absolutely no fun allowed – only balance and totally not competitively focused but also perfectly symmetrical stuff allowed.

Whatever our thoughts on how Games Workshop is stewarding the competitive scene, it’s clear that 11th Edition’s requirements for the terrain areas are extremely specific (which way the bumps should point) as well as the terrain features (light and dense). Because you cannot say things like “this feature is over 3 inches tall and is therefore dense”, it’s extremely important the terrain is WYSIWYG.

Also, because the deployment and layout is disposition-dependent it guarantees the players will be setting up! Now imagine explaining that the little Tyranid claw thing is the dense part of the light-dense-light feature on the Tennessee but the bigger claw is the light feature on the Kentucky. For five rounds… and then also getting to argue about it. So we are doing our very best to be faithful to the terrain features expected size and shape to facilitate smooth deployments and gameplay. Nothing is perfect, like the GW kits both robo-painted and meat-painted, but we’re very close.

Something special about good looking armies on good looking terrain – worth the effort!

We have banished the dreaded MDF L-shaped ruin and summoned another terrain entity – time will tell what it does to 11th Edition and the future of 40k (and other systems). Honestly, we’re so busy with about a week until BOLTERCON 2026 that we don’t have time to ponder too much.

The Map Is Not The Terrain

Back to the title of this post- we’ll be addressing some of the small differences our boards have from the official GW Armageddon terrain sets. We will have many of those deployed, but around half the field will be a combination of cool-looking kits we’ve painted up from around the internet.

MANY THANKS TO THOSE BOLTERS AT DAWN CLUB MEMBERS AND STAFF WHO STEPPED UP AND PAINTED TERRAIN – we could not have done it without you. It is an incredible achievement to put on an event of our size with fully painted terrain a mere 5 months after an edition launch – from scratch! Lead by example, and dope sharpens dope.

Club member Sean K. killing it! This is the Armored Ruins Foldable Terrain, which has a good amount of interesting detail and fits the bill exactly. If you don’t have a 3D printer, we found Tabletop Terrain to be reasonably priced with quick shipping. Our printers couldn’t produce fast enough for our timetable, but we did run off some bangers.

Why am I showing you these tables? Because the map is not the terrain, dear reader. We play a tabletop wargame with free movement, dice, and miniatures. Since launching in 1986, the game has been on a (bumpy) trajectory to be the most popular in the world. The amount of abstraction in the game versus physical reality has changed over time. Based on the rules of the events you’re playing in, they may allow additional abstractions to meet their expectations for how the game should be played.

Games Workshop has given us a prescriptive way to set up the board in 11th Edition to facilitate our current game abstractions in the Event Companion (currently v1.3). You and your opponent will arrive at a single deployment and layout based on your dispositions. Then, you’ll see something like this:

For the official GW terrain, this is exactly the map you need for the terrain you have! Put the AB on the Idaho and off you go. For other terrain, it will be obvious (we hope) which pieces go where on the boards. Once placed, you will play the game on the terrain – not the map. This is a difficult thing for those who play a lot of computer-based simulations or plot out their moves in advance. I want to assure you that the terrain is there and will be played as it is. You may hear “this isn’t here on the official layouts so I can put my model here.” Wrong. Oh so very wrong.

Shout out to club member John G. putting us all to shame with this dope Tyranid board!

You’ll notice a pattern here at Bolters at Dawn – clarity through WYSIWYG. Your armies show up communicating their rules & wargear to a table that hopefully does the same. Ruins might have taller floors. Light terrain may be longer. Dense terrain might be thicker. These are all completely normal and satisfying facets of tabletop wargaming. Embrace the challenge, ask those questions, and we’ll see you EXTREMELY VERY SOON at BOLTERCON 2026!
